I attended my first TACWT conference in 1987. In 1987, economic despair had caused me to leave teaching (and writing), but that TACWT conference, with its sessions and conversations and camaraderie, reminded me of the excitement that comes from being a part of a community of writers and teachers of creative writing. That 1987 TACWT conference was one of a number of things that led me back to the literary path. So, now, over twenty years later, I am honored to serve as president of this long-standing organization. It occurs to me that I am probably the organization’s only “unelected” president, having assumed the office without a vote after hurricane Rita blew away our planned conference in San Antonio.
